English Grammar Exercise Grade -6

1. Verb Tenses (Present, Past, Future)

Tenses tell us when an action happens. While each tense has four sub-types (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous), here are the core definitions:

·         Present Tense: Used for actions happening right now, habits, or general truths.

o    Example: "She writes code every day." / "The sun is hot."

·         Past Tense: Used for actions that already happened and are finished.

o    Example: "She wrote a letter yesterday." / "We visited London last year."

·         Future Tense: Used for actions that haven’t happened yet but will happen later.

o    Example: "She will write a book next year." / "They are going to travel tomorrow."

2. Conditionals

Conditionals describe a hypothetical situation and its consequence (the "if-then" sentences). They rely on something else happening first.

·         Definition: Sentences with two clauses—an "if" clause (condition) and a main clause (result).

·         Example (Real/Likely): "If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the picnic." (First Conditional)

·         Example (Hypothetical/Unlikely): "If I won the lottery, I would buy an island." (Second Conditional)

3. Degrees of Adjectives

Adjectives change their form to show the intensity or to compare things. There are three degrees:

Degree

Definition

Example

Positive

Describes a single thing without comparing it to anything else.

"This coffee is hot." / "He is tall."

Comparative

Compares exactly two things. (Usually ends in -er or uses more).

"This coffee is hotter than yours." / "He is taller than me."

Superlative

Compares three or more things to find the highest degree. (Ends in -est or uses most).

"This is the hottest coffee in the shop." / "He is the tallest boy in class."

4. Possessive Pronouns

These are words used to show ownership, replacing a noun so you don't repeat yourself.

·         Definition: Pronouns that indicate who something belongs to (e.g., mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs).

·         Example: "That phone isn't yours; it is mine." (Instead of saying "It is my phone.")

·         Note: Don't confuse them with possessive adjectives (like my, your, his), which must sit right in front of a noun (e.g., "This is my car").

5. Subject-Verb Agreement

This is the golden rule of sentence structure: your subject and your verb must match in number.

·         Definition: Singular subjects take singular verbs; plural subjects take plural verbs.

·         Singular Example: "The cat chases the mouse." (One cat = verb ends in s).

·         Plural Example: "The cats chase the mouse." (Multiple cats = verb does not end in s).

6. Active vs. Passive Voice

This is all about who is doing the action vs. who is receiving it.

·         Active Voice: The subject of the sentence performs the action. It's direct and punchy.

o    Example: "The chef cooked the meal." (Subject = Chef, Action = Cooked).

·         Passive Voice: The subject receives the action. The focus shifts to the object, and the doer is either moved to the end or omitted.

o    Example: "The meal was cooked by the chef." (Focus is on the meal).
